INTENTION

by Ross Bishop

Intention provides the driving force in The Universe of conscious beings. Focused intention, free of inhibiting limitation, will bring the power and abundance of The Universe to us. Intention, as I use it here, contravenes our normal understanding of the word.

Many people complain that they have focused their intent on something, and The Universe seems to ignore their requests and dumps pain and suffering on them as well! They think they have total intention; they say they want these things, yet obstacles seem to get in their way. They want financial abundance; they get financial stress. They ask for a loving relationship and they get an unsatisfying relationship and emotional pain!

We came to Earth to resolve the conflict between our propensity to believe certain things and the truth. These problems come from the unresolved conflicts within ourselves. Deep down we don’t believe that we are worthy. So, without realizing it, we push away the very things we say we want. The Universe, being an obedient servant says, “If you want these things, I will show you where the problem is.” It then shows us our resistance in the only way it can, by creating situations that highlight our resistance.

If, for example, we desire financial abundance, it will create situations that highlight our belief that we are not worthy. If we desire a loving relationship but don’t believe we deserve one, we will experience a series of relationship failures that ask us to address what we believe about ourselves. But we get so lost in the pain of these failures that we miss the big blinking sign with an arrow pointing to our heart that says, “The answer is in here!”

The other aspect of this problem is that we don’t want to have to address this issue ourselves. If we don’t have abundance or a loving relationship, we want God to fix it. That avoids us having to address our issues of self-worth or feeling unlovable.

The Universe does not fulfill attachment desires. We have to do that for ourselves through force of effort. In the waking world, we create goals and then effort, what we call intention, to achieve them. But because we start from a false premise, this approach never works very well and it is exhausting!

The Universe does respond to our wishes. If we ask for a loving relationship it will respond by illustrating the source of the problem in the only way it can, by showing us how we reject real intimacy. Because that is where the problem is. That can be a painful path, but it seems to be the only way that most of us will get the message. Without it, it is doubtful we would change.

Faced with that aspect, some people choose to compromise rather than deal with their beliefs. They opt out of having a real relationship and find a codependent partner who will not challenge them. And then they simply endure the frustration of being unsatisfied. At least that way, they get someone to be frustrated with and angry at.

Intention gets written and spoken of a lot in New Age circles, but desire on the material plane will always conflict with universal harmony. A real need, by the way, does not involve anyone else. Besides, although we have many wants, we have few real needs. What is fascinating is how emotional wanting evaporates once you reach a place of real harmony with life.
