LIFE is perplexing and enigmatic. We experience it, yet we fail to comprehend it. We engage in the game without fully understanding why we participate. This was intended. If the intricacies of LIFE had been explained to us beforehand, it would have undermined the very purpose of our existence.
As with all Sufi teachings, this allegorical story is made to illustrate some aspect of our journey towards Oneness. It speaks to the trials and struggles we all face.
In the 12th century, Persian culture had reached a pinnacle of understanding that is as yet unmatched in human history. Although birthed in a Muslim environment, Sufism is not attached to any religion. It can best be thought of as a metaphysical philosophy rather than as a religion.
Being able to love freely and openly is a great concept, but unfortunately it’s not something we experience very often. And although people do try, the love we mostly see is a pretty watered down version of the real thing. We want to love unconditionally, but we just seem unable to do it.
